DIET Kozhikode A Brief History

It has been more than half a century since India achieved ‘independence’. The constitution of India under Article 45 made it obligatory to the part of government for providing free and compulsory education for all children until they complete the age of fourteen years. It also gave emphasis for 100% literacy. This objective is yet to be realised in its intended sense . Government of India had initiated and tried to launch a lot of suggestions put forward by various Education Commissions during the past years. Of these, National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986 was the land mark in the history of Indian education. The NPE was a product of various types of discourses made among different strata of Indian society. The policy suggested for revamping the entire system of our education in a qualitative perspective. The nomenclature of the Ministry of Education was changed to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). The NPE provided some introspections and critical awareness for the stake holders. The NPE 1986 was revisited in 1992 and the POA gained a positive interventionist role and gave thrust on enrolment, retention and achievement. The POA also emphasised the removal of disparities in access and equalization of opportunities under affirmative action programmes.
Quality Education is the bedrock of quality life of our society. With a view to ensure these aspects, NPE suggested to strengthen the two dimensions our teacher education: Pre-Service and In-service-area of our nation. As part of it, District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) were established across the nation. There are 500 DIETs in India. The vision of the institutes is to provide better academic input for teachers in service as well as prospective teachers. A revisit of the in-service and prospective teacher education programmes existing in the states were undertaken as a follow up activity . As a result, effective and dynamic pedagogical practices were being operatonalised under the aegis of the DIETs
Department of Edn. Kerala established 14 DIETS in three phased manner. Three DIETS (Trichur, Kasaragod and Wyand) came into existence in 1989. Second phase was in 1991 with the establishment of 4 DIETS which were at Kannur, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta and Ernakulam. The rest of the DIETS (7 DIETS) also were established in 1992.
DIET Kozhikode is situated in Vatakara, 50kms away from Kozhikode city. Vatakara is known as “ Kadathanad” famous for its historical ballads Vadakkanpattu. The epic legend “Thacholi Othenan” lived here near the Lokanarkavue temple 3kms away from Vatakara.
Vatakara is reputed for the “Kalari” of martial arts. DIET Kozhikode is situated in Puthur, 2Kms South East of Vatakara. As per the NPE, the then GBTS, Vatakara was upgraded as District Institute of Education & Training Kozhikode.
